SELF ASSESSMENT
Is Your Fearful Avoidant Ex Really Done? [TEST]
If the behaviours you checked align with someone who has already moved on and is done, trust those patterns.
Fearful avoidant exes can be confusing because they may still text, respond, check in, meet up and even be sexually intimate while already being emotionally done. This means you can still be in contact with a fearful avoidant ex without actually being in their long-term picture.
To understand whether a fearful avoidant is truly done, you have to look at what they’re doing in their own life — not just how they communicate with you.
1. Have they reorganized their life in ways that exclude you i.e. new hobbies or social circles that remove an overlap with you?
4 – Yes, their life looks completely restructured without me in it.
3 – Mostly—many routines now exclude me.
2 – Some changes, but not fully cut out.
1 – No, much of their routine still resembles the old one.
2. Have they stopped showing any visible signs of subtle monitoring or indirect interest?
4 – Yes — absolutely no signs they keep an eye on anything.
3 – Very few signs; mostly disconnected.
2 – Some indirect monitoring now and then.
1 – They still hovering or observant.
3. Have they emotionally shut down — no reactions, no visible jealousy, no noticeable hot and cold related to you?
4 – Completely shutdown — nothing you do affects them anymore.
3 – Mostly neutral with minimal reactions.
2 – Occasional emotional responses slip through.
1 – They still react in meaningful ways.
4. Did they set or reinforce strict boundaries without explaining or compromise?
4 – Yes, very firm boundaries with no room for connection.
3 – Stronger boundaries than before, but not absolute.
2 – Some boundaries, but inconsistent.
1 – No major changes in boundaries.
5. Do they avoid familiar places, shared spots, or routines that remind them of you?
4 – They avoid all shared spaces completely.
3 – They avoid most but not all.
2 – Sometimes avoid, sometimes not.
1 – No, they still go to shared places.
6. Have they moved on socially — new friendships, activities, or identity shifts that signal a new chapter without you?
4 – Yes, they’re building a new life identity separate from us.
3 – Somewhat—there are noticeable shifts.
2 – Some changes, but not deep shifts.
1 – No, their social life hasn’t noticeably changed.
7. Are they investing energy in self-focused pursuits — career, hobbies, independence — in ways that feel like reclaiming independence, not “healing to reconnect”?
4 – Yes — strong return to total self-focus.
3 – Mostly—self-focus dominates.
2 – Some self-focus, but they still seem emotionally tangled.
1 – No — they don’t seem to have redirected their energy.
8. Do they show no signs of keeping sentimental attachments — no keeping gifts visible, no holding onto reminders, no visible nostalgia?
4 – Completely removed all traces.
3 – Mostly removed, with a few neutral leftovers.
2 – Some sentimental items remain.
1 – They still hold onto meaningful reminders.
9. Have they emotionally “reset” how they present themselves — new style, new demeanor, or a noticeably different emotional tone since the breakup?
4 – Significant reset; they seem like a different version of themselves.
3 – Moderate reset; noticeable changes.
2 – Small or inconsistent changes.
1 – Little to no change.
10. Have they created psychological distance — speaking about themselves, their plans, and their future as if you were never part of it?
4 – Yes, completely future-focused with no reference to us.
3 – Mostly future-focused, minimal references to the past.
2 – Sometimes speak in ways that reflect the past.
1 – They still talk as if I exist in their larger narrative.
Scoring
32–40: They are completely done – They are is behaving in ways consistent with a fearful avoidant who has fully detached: restructuring their life, removing emotional cues, creating distance, and re-establishing complete independence.
24–31: They are detaching – They are moving on in some ways but not fully. Some aspects of emotional or psychological connection remain, suggesting ambivalence or slow detachment/emotional doors are closing.
13–23: They are distancing – There are signs of distancing or deactivation, but their behaviours still show subtle attachment, awareness, or unfinished emotional business.
0- 12: They’re not done – Their outward behaviour does not match a fearful avoidant who has emotionally closed the door. Even if they seem distant, they ‘re still emotionally attached.
It’s important that you know that fearful avoidants rarely give clean, definitive endings. They may continue engaging out of habit, guilt, anxiety, or emotional comfort. If the behaviours you checked align with someone who has already moved on and is done, trust those patterns. They reveal far more than the occasional text, polite response, or familiar pull toward connection.
