Can Becoming Secure Help Get Back An Avoidant Ex?
A secure you is able to neutralize most of your ex’s insecure behaviours. You no longer automatically trigger matching…
Yes. Becoming more securely attached can absolutely improve your chances of getting back with an avoidant ex. It doesn’t guarantee that your ex will come back, but gives you the best chance of rebuilding the kind of connection that an avoidant ex is most likely to feel safe re-entering, while also helping you avoid the anxious behaviours that often push reconnection off course.
But becoming secure it’s not just understanding an avoidant attachment style, it’s being able to:
- Deal with your break-up situation calmly, confidently and in a constructive way
- Have genuine empathy and self-awareness
- Get close to your ex and ‘show love’ without being smothering or needy
- Have reasonable expectations that your ex will return your love
- Comfortable with closeness without worrying about rejection/abandonment or about your ex getting too close to them
- Experience relationships as both safe and rewarding.
This requires serious work and not just reading a few articles or books, or watching a few YouTube or TikTok videos, and declaring yourself securely attached. You have to want to be more secure and do the work.
You have to learn to provide safety and security for both yourself and your ex, because only by being secure will you be able change your dynamic to healthy, safe and secure.
This is how becoming secure helps get your ex back
The change is how you show up and how an ex, whether dismissive avoidant, fearful avoidant, or anxiously attached, experiences you. Most people expect reconnection to resemble the old dynamic. Becoming secure allows you to create new experiences that gradually replace old expectations, making it possible to build a different relationship instead of repeating the last one.
1. You become easier to talk to
Instead of worrying that every conversation will lead to conflict, pressure, or emotional intensity, your ex experiences conversations that feel safe, respectful, and enjoyable. That makes them more willing to keep talking, which is essential because reconnection only grows through continued positive interactions.
2. You stop making decisions based on fear
Rather than letting fear of rejection, loss, or vulnerability dictate your next move, you make thoughtful decisions that align with the kind of relationship you want to build. This creates consistency and trust, making your actions easier for your ex to understand and respond to.
3. You don’t disappear when things become uncomfortable
Whether it’s an awkward conversation, mixed signals, or a temporary setback, you stay engaged instead of withdrawing, shutting down, or pushing harder. This helps break the cycle of disconnection and shows your ex that the relationship can handle discomfort without falling apart.
4. You handle setbacks without abandoning the process
A cancelled plan, slower replies, or a difficult conversation no longer causes you to give up or drastically change course. You remain patient, steady, and focused on the bigger picture, which gives reconnection the time and stability it needs to develop naturally.
5. You become the secure-base that stabilizes the dynamic
A secure you is able to neutralize most of your ex’s insecure attachment behaviours and in so doing, not only stabilize their insecure behaviours but also create a stronger, healthier and lasting bond.
This happens because secure attachment changes the way the relationship functions. Your ex’s insecurities no longer automatically trigger a matching insecurity in you:
- When your ex acts in ways that are typical of their attachment style, you respond thoughtfully, calmly and constructively.
- When your ex is triggered, they don’t trigger you because there is nothing to trigger.
- When something unexpected happens you don’t automatically react based on past experience, you respond to what is happening NOW, etc.
This creates a more stable environment where getting back together is more likely.
Anything else is recreating attachment trauma, perpetuating unhealthy beliefs about love, relationships and relationship partners, and making you better at being insecure.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t get your ex back if you are not secure. You can absolutely get back together without working on becoming secure. But you will find yourselves trapped in the same unhealthy or toxic dynamic because you are both still insecurely attached, and triggering each others’ insecurities.
At some point, you have to make it make sense!
