AVOIDANT EX
7 Signs Avoidant Ex is Sexually Attracted – Make It Work For You
Even when an avoidant is emotionally guarded sexual attraction can temporarily bypass an avoidant’s defenses and create closeness fast.
Over the years, I’ve found that the chances of getting back an avoidant are generally much better if sexual attraction is clearly still strong than if your avoidant ex doesn’t feel sexually attracted to you.
This might seem like a contraction to what has been a persistent theme of everything I’ve written about making an avoidant feel safe if you want them back. But it’s really not.
Emotional safety is what makes an avoidant lower their defenses, trust you more, and feel more comfortable being vulnerable. This makes emotional safety a very important part of reconnection. But emotional safety alone does not, create sexual attraction.
Sexual attraction is what gives the connection its romantic dimension.
Someone can feel safe with you, trust you and be emotionally comfortable with you without necessarily feeling sexually attracted to you. And after the breakup, an avoidant can continue to deeply care, appreciate, and respect you but feel no romantic or sexual pull toward them.
On the other hand, someone can feel like they don’t trust you and even feel no deep romantic connection, but feel sexually drawn to you. After the breakup, an avoidant can maintain emotional distance or avoid emotional intimacy, but the sexual attraction is clearly still strong.
Why your chances are generally better if sexual attraction is still strong
Sexual attraction is often harder to create or recreate than emotional attraction because it involves physiological arousal and physical and sensory cues, as well as psychological factors. These responses are not something you can simply create through better communication or by making someone feel emotionally safe.
Changing how you communicate and creating greater emotional safety play a role in sexual attraction, but sexual attraction also needs physical appearance, chemistry, sexual arousal and sexual anticipation.
When sexual attraction is already there, the emotional safety you create gives that attraction room to grow rather than having to create the attraction itself.
Without sexual attraction, reconnection relies almost entirely on emotional effort, areas where avoidants tend to struggle most. With sexual attraction, you have another force working to pull the two of you toward each other. This creates parallel momentum in the reconnection process, which can help things move more quickly and increase the chances of getting back together.
Here are 7 strong signs that your avoidant is still sexually attracted to you – make it work for you!
1. They respond to sexual or suggestive cues
Some avoidants initiate sexual or suggestive cues especially if they feel confident that you are still sexually attracted to them. And if you drop flirtatious hints, subtle sexual comments, or show confidence in your sexuality, they reciprocate both in energy, tone and engagement.
Others may not overtly reciprocate, but positively engage with smiling, laughing, or showing that they like the direction things are taking.
2. They flirt or tease you
Flirting and playful teasing are classic signs that attraction is still there. This includes:
- Witty banter with a suggestive edge
- Compliments on appearance, style, or presence
- Playful challenges with a sexual hint
These behaviours can be a sign that they’re enjoying the sexual tension, and they can also sometimes be an avoidant ex’s way of testing boundaries or gauging your sexual interest.
3. They test boundaries around intimacy
This happens more when an avoidant has concerns about how they come across (e.g. only interested in sex) or afraid of raising expectations about getting back together.
Avoidants may approach sexual interest cautiously, subtly “testing the waters” with ambiguous comments about attraction or pushing limits in playful ways to see your reaction
4. They seem more energized when the conversation has sexual undertones
Even if they’re not explicitly sexual, avoidants sometimes show sexual attraction through conversation:
- Talking about scenarios that imply closeness or chemistry
- Discussing physical attraction indirectly
- Engaging in humour, teasing, or shared fantasies
- Their focus on these areas often signals that sexual interest is still there, even if subtle.
5. They say and do things that go beyond “just friends”
If you’re starting as friends, they are attuned to you in a way that goes beyond a purely platonic connection. For example, they text more, hold on to conversations longer and even their check in goes beyond casual check-ins.
They also express interest in your romantic or sexual life in a way that feels personal rather than casual platonic interest.
These behaviours signal that, even under the guise of friendship, your avoidant ex is testing the waters and gauging connection beyond just friendship.
6. They seek out alone or intimate situations
Avoidants who are still sexually attracted to you find excuses to be in spaces where intimacy could occur:
- Asking to meet one-on-one rather than in groups
- Suggesting private activities like movies, drinks, or walks
- Staying physically close when possible
Being alone with you creates the conditions for desire to be acted upon, even if they don’t verbalize it.
7. They initiate physical contact, even playfully
Avoidants rarely initiate touch casually unless there is some level of sexual or physical attraction. This could include:
- Playful touches during conversation
- Light hugs that linger
- Brushing against you intentionally
Even small, seemingly innocent gestures can indicate lingering desire, especially if they otherwise appear emotionally distant.
If you are seeing these signs from your avoidant ex, consider yourself “lucky” because sexual attraction can create intense, fast closeness with avoidants. Even when an avoidant is emotionally guarded sexual attraction can temporarily bypass an avoidant’s defenses and create closeness fast because sexual attraction doesn’t require emotional vulnerability, commitment, future planning, or emotional accountability.
Closeness feels easy because it isn’t asking them to emotionally show up
From a reconnection perspective, this can cut both ways. On the downside, sexual attraction without vulnerability, commitment, future planning, or emotional accountability can work against reconnection because it creates closeness that doesn’t build trust or long-term investment. They may show warmth, attention, or affection but without deeper engagement, the connection doesn’t translate into consistency, willingness to invest and can actually undermine the reconnection process.
On the upside, persistent sexual attraction can act as a bridge, keeping the avoidant engaged and curious even after the breakup. It provides a natural motivation to interact, stay present, and tolerate closeness creating openings for emotional connection to slowly develop without triggering their defenses.
Sexual attraction can keep the door open but it cannot carry reconnection on it’s own
Reconnecting based on sexual chemistry can work with avoidants, but only under very specific conditions:
1. The sexual attraction is strong and persistent – The avoidant still feels drawn to you over time, not just in isolated moments.
2. No pressure or expectation – The interaction doesn’t demand commitment, emotional vulnerability, or future planning.
3. Emotional safety exists in other areas – Even if guarded, they feel comfortable, regulated, and not emotionally overwhelmed when around you.
4. Interactions are consistent without long gaps in connection – Regular contact without high emotional demands allows trust and interest to grow.
5. Avoidant feels autonomy is preserved – They don’t perceive the reconnection as a trap or obligation.
6. Chemistry is paired with moments of emotional connection – Even f moments acts of emotional connection reinforce the pull without overwhelming them.
7. Stay grounded and non-reactive – Your ability to remain emotionally regulated when sex is slow or absent is crucial. If they sense disappointment, insecurity, or pressure, their system reads it as demand and pulls away.
Without these conditions, sexual attraction alone can lead to:
- Moments of closeness and passion – then deactivation or a sudden loss of interest afterward.
- A friends with benefits situation or dynamic. Connection stays physical and compartmentalized, never moving toward a relationship or even getting back together.
It can also completely derail reconnection especially if sex becomes the metric for “are we reconnecting,”. An avoidant will feel pressure, expectation, or being pulled into a role they’re not ready for, or don’t want.
In short, if sexual chemostry leads to distance or confusion afterward, it working against you. If it leads to increased consistency, openness, and ease — good sign.
