REBOUND RELATIONSHIPS
14 Signs Avoidant in a Rebound Is Leaning Back Toward You
The strongest sign isn’t usually one specific behaviour. It’s when you find yourself thinking: “This feels different than it did…
As you may have read in many of my articles about avoidants in rebounds, I’m not opposed to trying to get back with an avoidant in a rebound.
I’ve seen far too many people get back into a relationship and stay together after one or both people have been in a rebound. Sometimes a rebound shows someone what they were missing. Sometimes it gives them the distance needed to reflect on the previous relationship and recognize the value of the connection they had.
A rebound can also highlight the difference between excitement and true emotional compatibility. The novelty of something new can feel powerful at first, but over time, people may start noticing the qualities, comfort, and emotional safety that were unique to their previous relationship.
Although every avoidant and every dynamic is different, here are some changes worth paying attention to.
1. They’re reaching out more often than they used to
A few months ago, you may have been the one initiating most conversations. Now they’re finding reasons to contact you first.
The change isn’t necessarily dramatic. It might be a text here, a check-in there, or sharing something that reminded them of you. The important part is that the effort is becoming more balanced.
2. Conversations last longer
Early on, interactions may have felt rushed or transactional. You’d get short replies, delayed responses, and conversations that ended quickly.
Now they seem willing to keep talking. They’re asking follow-up questions, responding in more detail, and allowing conversations to develop naturally instead of ending them at the first opportunity.
3. They seem more interested in your life
At the beginning of the rebound, they may have appeared largely indifferent to what you were doing.
Now they’re asking about:
- Your plans
- Your work
- Your family
- Your hobbies
- Your goals
The questions feel more personal and genuine than they did before.
4. They remember things you tell them
One sign that many people often overlook is improved attention.
A few months ago, it might have felt like information went in one ear and out the other. Now they reference details from previous conversations.
That usually means they’re placing greater value on the connection.
5. They no longer seem in a rush to end conversations
Earlier in the rebound, interactions may have felt like obligations.
- Now the texts or messages are longer.
- They bring up new topics.
- They continue the discussion.
They generally seem comfortable staying connected rather than looking for an exit.
6. They share more about their own life
Avoidants often keep conversations surface-level when they’re emotionally distancing.
If they’re gradually becoming more open, you notice them volunteering information that they previously kept to themselves.
They’re letting you into their world again instead of keeping you at arm’s length.
7. They’re more emotionally present
A few months ago, conversations may have felt polite but emotionally flat.
- Now there’s more warmth.
- More humor.
- More engagement.
- More personality.
It feels less like talking to an acquaintance and more like talking to someone who genuinely enjoys the interaction.
8. They bring up shared memories more often
When people are fully invested elsewhere, they rarely spend much time revisiting meaningful moments with an ex.
But now instead of avoiding the past, they’re referencing it naturally because those memories are becoming emotionally accessible again.
9. They seem genuinely happy to hear from you
One of the clearest differences is enthusiasm. A few months ago, your messages may have received neutral responses.
Now they seem pleased when you reach out and may even encourage you to reach out with words like, it was good to hear from you or talk to you soon.
You can often feel the difference without them saying it directly.
10. They seek your opinion or perspective
When a rebound is going well, people usually turn to their current partner for an opinion , perspective or advice.
But if instead of simply chatting, they begin asking what you think, want your opinion, your advice or viewpoint on things happening in their life, that usually reflects increased trust and value placed on the connection.
11. They’re becoming more consistent
They may not be making direct gestures, but compared to several months ago, they’re:
- Showing up more reliably
- Replying more regularly
- Following through more often
- Maintaining contact more steadily
That’s a noticeable shift.
12. They show more affection and talk of physical contact
A few months ago, your conversations may have been purely friendly but now, they’re saying things like:
- “I could really use one of your hugs right now.”
- “You always gave the best hugs.”
- “I wish I could give you a hug.”
These comments aren’t necessary for the conversation, which is what makes them meaningful. They’re telling you, they’d be comfortable with physical closeness.
13. Contact feels more intentional
Perhaps the biggest difference is that the interaction no longer feels polite. A few months ago, contact may have felt sporadic, polite, or driven by convenience. Now it feels purposeful.
They’re choosing to maintain the connection rather than simply responding when it’s there.
14. You feel the shift
The strongest sign isn’t usually one specific behaviour. It’s when you find yourself thinking: “This feels different than it did three or four months ago.”
