AVOIDANT EX
12 Things Avoidant Exes Say When They Still Care Deeply
Many avoidant exes feel more than they’re able to show. They just communicate it in ways that feel safer and less emotionally exposing.
Avoidant exes rarely make their feelings obvious. Instead, they communicate in subtle, indirect, and often confusing ways. But just because an avoidant doesn’t show care the way a secure ex might doesn’t mean they don’t feel it. In fact, avoidants often care deeply, they just struggle to express it without feeling overwhelmed or exposed.
If you know what to listen for, you can hear their feelings between the lines. Here are 12 of the most common things avoidant exes say that actually reveal they still care and may be hiding feelings for you.
1. “Just checking in—how have you been?”
Avoidants don’t “just check in” with people they don’t care about. Reaching out after a breakup requires emotional risk for them. When they check on you or ask how you’ve been, it’s their version of saying: I still think about you.
It’s may sound casual but from an avoidant ex it’s meaningful.
2. “I don’t want to mislead you”
This is one of the most misunderstood avoidant phrases. Many people hear it as rejection, but for avoidants, it often means: I care about you enough that I don’t want to hurt you or create false hope.
Avoidants struggle to navigate emotions, but they deeply value not inflicting pain. Saying they don’t want to mislead you is their way of taking responsibility and protecting you emotionally, even if they’re unsure about what they want.
3. “I don’t want you to wait for me.”
When an avoidant says this, it’s almost never because they’ve stopped caring. It’s usually because they care too much. They know they’re not emotionally ready, and the last thing they want is to hold your life hostage.
What they’re really saying is: I don’t know when I’ll feel ready for a relationship, and I don’t want you sacrificing your happiness for me.
It’s often rooted in guilt, insecurity, and genuine concern for your future.
4. “I miss the way we used to…”
Avoidants more specifically dismissive avoidants rarely admit missing anyone or anything. When they say they missed something specific you did together, they’re communicating they still care without exposing themselves too much.
This is their safe way to revisit the bond you had without being too sentimental.
5. “I don’t remember why we broke.”
Avoidants process feelings slowly and privately. When they say this, it signals that something emotional is shifting inside them. They’ve been reflecting on the relationship, the breakup, or what went wrong — even if they don’t elaborate.
It’s a sign you’re still emotionally significant.
6. “I hope you’re taking care of yourself.”
This kind of statement shows concern for you but filtered through an avoidant’s fear of vulnerability and expressed in an avoidant’s more practical and pragmatic rather than emotional communication style.
It comes out sounding lie they’re just being polite, but underneath is genuine care.
7. “I understand if you don’t want contact right now.”
This is an avoidant ex’s way of saying they are aware you are hurting and they don’t want to make it worse.
It’s their cautious way of expressing care and validating your feelings. Something avoidant’s tend to avoid because direct expression of care feels overwhelming and exposes them to vulnerability.
8. “I want you in my life.”
This is one of the strongest indicators of lingering attachment. Avoidants don’t say things like this unless there’s a sincere desire to keep the bond even if they don’t want a relationship right now.
It means the connection still matters to them and they don’t want total disconnection.
9. “Let’s touch base in a week/month”
The very fact that they communicate this instead of disappearing means that they value the connection you have. They need space but don’t want to shut down completely — which can easily happen.
It’s like someone saying “wake me up in an hour”. They expect to oversleep and this is their way of making sure that doesn’t happen.
An avoidant ex who doesn’t care or who is truly done doesn’t worry about completely shutting down.
10. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”
Avoidants often feel guilt and worry about hurting the people they love and care about. “You didn’t do anything wrong” is their way of taking responsibility for hurting you and protecting you from taking the breakup personally or as a reflection of your worth.
This is even more powerful coming from a dismissive avoidant ex. A dismissive avoidant’s default position is to blame an ex.
11. “Are you seeing anyone?”
Avoidants don’t ask about your dating life unless they’re emotionally invested. “Are you seeing anyone?” an avoidant ex’s indirect way of checking the status of the connection without openly admitting they still cate.
It reflects curiosity, concern over your availability and for fearful avoidants, it’s their way of asking if they still matter to you.
12. “We don’t know what the future holds.”
An avoidant who’s ruled out the future usually says “I just don’t see a future”. When they say “We don’t know what the future holds”, it’s an avoidant ex’s way of leaving the door open without promising anything.
Instead of closing things off, they’re acknowledging that the possibility of reconnection isn’t completely off the table.
What does it mean for you that your avoidant ex still cares or hiding feelings for you?
Many avoidant exes feel more than they’re able to show. They just communicate it in ways that feel safer and less emotionally exposing. But knowing that your avoidant ex still cares doesn’t mean you should cling to hope or accept breadcrumbs.
Care alone doesn’t guarantee readiness, emotional availability, or a healthy relationship dynamic. You can acknowledge their feelings without putting your life on hold. It’s important to protect your own emotional well-being, maintain your boundaries, and focus on whether their actions and not just their subtle signals support real reconnection.
